Fred Merkle
I’ve just recently learned that Toledo was home to a young man in the early 1900’s that later became a very famous baseball player. Frederick Charles Merkle was born in Watertown, Wisconsin in 1888 and moved to Toledo in 1889. He lived in Toledo until 1906 when he started his professional baseball career. Fred graduated from Toledo High School in 1905. Though he gained fame as a baseball player, Fred also played football at THS and even coached the high school football team in 1906.
I have the 1905 Toledo High School yearbook, which contains three photos of Frederick Charles Merkle. They are his Senior picture, the football team picture, and the baseball team picture.
This is his baseball card, from the Library of Congress collection.
